Who hit the right notes on the red carpet at the2014 Tony Awards, and who was off-key? Let's run down the best and worst looks of the night:
BEST DRESSED: "Violet" star and Tony nominee Sutton Foster turned up the volume of her otherwise classic belted ballgown from Reem Acra by picking hot pink and pairing it with contrasting turquoise drop earrings.
RUNNER-UP: Zac Posen's calling card is his artfully constructed mermaid gowns, but the iridescent burgundy number looked anything but standard on the statuesque Idina Menzel, a Tony nominee for "If/Then."
MOST CHUTZPAH: "After Midnight"nominee Adriane Lenox vamped her way along the red carpet in a belted orange coat she parted (front and rear) to reveal white formal shorts. The less said about the hat, the better.
BEST OPTICAL ILLUSION: Presenter Vera Farmiga wore a body-hugging Stella McCartney gown with undulating sheer stripes along the bodice.
WORST OPTICAL ILLUSION: Presenter Kate Mara wore an overly-embellished Dolce & Gabbana gown that made the waif-like actress look a foot wider than she actually is.
WARDROBE MALFUNCTION CODE RED: Fantasia Barrino must have used some duct tape double-stick tape to keep her breasts inside her low-cut turquoise minidress during her high-energy opening number for "After Midnight."
HOTTEST TREND: Orange is the new black. Presenter Fran Drescher donned a mermaid gown in variegated coral hues and Celia Keenan-Bolger, a nominee for “The Glass Menagerie," looked pert in an Audrey Hepburn-esque cocktail dress in saffron. And then there's Adriane Lenox's orange look.
